Eduardo ‘Shima’ Shimahara

A Brazilian who came to South Africa to study at the Sustainability Institute (SI), a shared alma mater, Shima is a rare breed.  With Brazilian and Japanese heritage, Shima is accomplished at Aikido and cooking. He has a passion for local ingredients and culinary heritage that he translated into the focus of his Masters at the SI. A dad to two beautiful kids, Shima is a man of much feeling and learning.  In fact, his background is in the ‘industry’ of education; something he values as a critical aspect of development, but with a focus on innovative hands-on learning.  Shima has taken his experience living in various parts of the world where he’s met similarly entrepreneurial-minded individuals to create the South Collective, a business offering “conscious and forward-thinking leaders” immersive educational experiences using the southern hemisphere as a classroom. I particularly value Shima’s cross-cultural sensitivities, his open-mindedness and holistic thinking.
